Wegen Krieg sind wir zwar nicht mehr so sehr besorgt (Wir hatten heute ein Gespräch mit einer Mutter, die auch hier an der Schule Lehrerin ist und sehr plausibel erklären konnte, weshalb es wahrscheinlich keinen Krieg und auch keine zweite Intifada geben wird), aber da wir immer noch keinen ernsthaften Sprachunterricht bekommen, nun schon eine ganze Weile zu neunt auf 50 Quadratmetern zusammen wohnen und auch das (gewünschte) Verhältnis zu den SchülerInnen - zumindest mir - immer noch Probleme macht, leidet der Elan doch arg. -Da bin ich also wieder. Hier in Israel ist vor einer Woche die deutsche Austauschgruppe mit Herrn Riegel und Frau Tomczak angekommen. Sechzehn Schüler insgesamt, zwölf Mädchen, vier Jungen, alles Elftklässler. -Ich hoffe, mein Rundbrief eins hat Euch erreicht; über das Wesentliche müßtet Ihr schon Bescheid wissen. Heute hatten wir Meeting mit Boaz, dem Schulleiter und Reena, einer Lehrerin aus den USA. Das hat mir sehr geholfen, weil das Ganze hier langsam eine Struktur bekommt, uns zusätzliche Angebote wie Ausflüge mit den Schülern oder AGen angeboten wurden und ich evtl. im Computerlaboratorium arbeiten kann. Wenn ich sehr viel Glück habe, wird mir vielleicht was auf meine Arbeitszeit angerechnet, mal sehen. Küche muß jedenfalls auf Dauer nicht unbedingt sein. Da ist man zwar aus der Sonne und im Winter aus dem Regen (3 Monate à 12 Regentage...), aber dafür fühlt man sich durch das ganze Putzzeug danach wie in Chemie gebadet (Umweltschutz? Ja, gibt es! Irgendwo...) und außerdem fühle ich mich zwischen lauter Hebro-only-Küchenkräften ziemlich allein... Jedenfalls steht seit heute fest: Arbeit 5 Tage die Woche, i.d.R. von 7.30 Uhr bis irgendwas zwischen 14.30 und 15.00 Uhr.

Hello Kitty wohin man schaut und eine Supermarktkette, die die meisten ihrer Produkte mit Heidi (aus der Trickserie) schmückt. - Da Kyoto erst nach dem Krieg zur Großstadt wurde, spielt im Gegensatz zu Osaka oder Tokio die U-Bahn eine untergeordnete Rolle. Zumindest die Sehenswürdigkeiten erreicht man mit Bussen, in denen man gemäß dem alten japanischen Sprichwort "Wo einer reinpasst, passen auch zehn rein." transportiert wird.

Wir haben uns daraufhin erkundigt, ob es üblich sei, dass Populärmusik-Konzerte in Shinto-Schreinen stattfinden, erhielten aber keine befriedigende Antwort.

Also wieder raus aus dem Zoo und in die umliegenden Berge, um noch ein paar Tempel zu finden. Die waren aber alle zu oder versteckt oder einfach uninteressant, deshalb sind wir mit schmerzenden Füßen zurück zur Kyoto Station. Inzwischen hatten wir auch den ÖPNV halbwegs verstanden und haben den Busfahrer nicht beim Fahrtantritt genervt - hier bezahlt man beim Aussteigen.

- Ein großer Teil der Menschen hier hat extrem schlechte Zähne. Ob das an den Behandlungskosten liegt oder an mangelndem Interesse, weiß ich nicht. Spielt wohl beides eine Rolle. Unter den jüngeren Japanern gibt es dagegen eine ganze Reihe, deren Zähne sehr gut gemacht sind. Das Bild ist ist von einem Laden in der Subway Mall, in dem man sich die Zähne anscheinend kurzfristig verschönern lassen kann.

Umeda

- Eigentlich wollten wir heute bereits nach Nagoya fahren und dort übernachten, damit wir morgen den ganzen Tag auf der Expo sein können. Da aber, wer hätte es gedacht, rund um die Expo kein Hotelzimmer zum Wochenende mehr zu bekommen war, mussten wir eben den Tag in Osaka rumbringen, was uns nach den ganzen Tempeln eigentlich ganz recht war. Schnell zurück zum Hotel, aus dem wir gerade ausgecheckt hatten und freundlich darum gebeten, dass sie uns unser Zimmer wieder geben.

World Expo in Aichi

- Heute war also die Expo dran. Da wir ja kein Zimmer in der Gegend bekommen hatten, sind wir erst mal zweieinhalb Stunden Zug gefahren. Allerdings nahm den größten Anteil daran der Shuttle-Zug, den wir sowieso hätten nehmen müssen, so dass die weitere Nacht in Osaka gar kein Nachteil war.

- Zuerst dachten wir, dass es vielleicht keine gute Idee war, am Sonntag auf die Expo zu gehen, weil es ziemlich voll war. Der nette Junge vom kanadischen Pavillon belehrte uns dann aber, dass wir großes Glück hätten, weil unter der Woche massenhaft Schulgruppen und Touristen auf der Expo unterwegs sind - heute waren es nur japanische Familien. "Ziemlich leer", meinte er. Außerdem war es bewölkt und unter 33°C, perfektes Wetter also.

Die 20 Minuten für Koreas 3D-Film waren noch kein Problem, die USA waren uns die halbe Stunde nicht wert. (Stattdessen gab's Eis.) Als wir dann aber versuchten, die Beiträge Japan und Deutschland zu sehen, wurde es dann aber recht schnell ernüchternd: Etwa zwei Stunden Wartezeit. Jeweils. Extrem faszinierend dabei war, dass die Japaner sich dadurch anscheinend nicht im mindesten gestört fühlten. Die Profis hatten kleine Klapphocker zum Warten dabei, aber bei den meisten ging es auch ohne.

Da das japanische Interesse am Ausland zumindest hier auf der Expo vor dem Essen halt machte, entschieden wir uns gegen Warten auf asiatisches Essen und für Spaghetti Bolognese. Die sechs Beschäftigten am Italien-Stand waren mit unserer einsamen Bestellung jedenfalls sichtlich unterfordert.

Der nette Junge vom kanadischen Pavillon belehrte uns dann aber, dass wir großes Glück hätten, weil unter der Woche massenhaft Schulgruppen und Touristen auf der Expo unterwegs sind - heute waren es nur japanische Familien. "Ziemlich leer", meinte er. Außerdem war es bewölkt und unter 33°C, perfektes Wetter also.

+ Dass "ziemlich leer" ziemlich relativ ist, zeigte sich dann aber doch recht deutlich; besonders vor den Länder-Pavillons, die uns der Kanadier empfohlen hatte. Die 20 Minuten für Koreas 3D-Film waren noch kein Problem, die USA waren uns die halbe Stunde nicht wert. (Stattdessen gab's Eis.) Als wir dann aber versuchten, die Beiträge Japan und Deutschland zu sehen, wurde es dann aber recht schnell ernüchternd: Etwa zwei Stunden Wartezeit. Jeweils. Extrem faszinierend dabei war, dass die Japaner sich dadurch anscheinend nicht im mindesten gestört fühlten. Die Profis hatten kleine Klapphocker zum Warten dabei, aber bei den meisten ging es auch ohne.

+ Auf Deutschland konnten wir guten Gewissens verzichten, da uns jemand von der Belegschaft auf Nachfrage abgeraten hatte: "Na ja, wir haben halt 'ne Achterbahn. Aber ich würde mich nicht anstellen."

+ Bevor es nach Hause ging, wollten wir gerne noch etwas essen, aber auch im "Food of the World Center" sah es hauptsächlich nach Anstehen aus. Allerdings nur auf den ersten Blick. Da das japanische Interesse am Ausland zumindest hier auf der Expo vor dem Essen halt machte, entschieden wir uns gegen Warten auf asiatisches Essen und für Spaghetti Bolognese. Die sechs Beschäftigten am Italien-Stand waren mit unserer einsamen Bestellung jedenfalls sichtlich unterfordert.

- Ganz offensichtlich gilt in Japan die Devise: Zwei Hinweisschilder sind besser als eines. Zum einen wird man vor allem möglichen gewarnt, zum anderen gibt es hier eine lebendige Kultur der Belehrung der Öffentlichkeit. Ein ordentlicher Japaner springt nicht in Züge, wenn sich die Türen schließen, geleitet Blinde durch die Straßen, stellt sein Mobiltelefon neben den Behindertensitzen aus (macht niemand!), weiß, dass man sich an öffnenden Fahrstuhltüren die Finger klemmen kann, beschmiert keine Wände, usw, usf.
- Außerdem darf man sein Handy nicht mehr auf Rolltreppen benutzen, wenn man der Frau vor sich fünfzig mal am Hintern herumgrabbelt. (Zumindest war das die Bedeutung, die sich aus der Illustration ergab.)

Tokio

- Der Tag fing heute etwas komisch an. Um elf Uhr klingelte das Telefon auf unserem Hotelzimmer und die Rezeption fragte etwas umständlich nach, wie das denn nun sei, mit uns und der Reinigung. Wir hatten nämlich, weil wir spät ins Bett gekommen waren, das "Please do not disturb"-Schild nach draußen gehängt, damit nicht um zehn Uhr die Putzkolonne anrückt. Also habe ich höflich nachgefragt, ob man das denn nicht auf morgen verschieben könnte. (Wir hatten keine Lust, unseren ganzen Kram wieder zusammenzuräumen, nur damit die die Handtücher wechseln. In dem großzügig geschnittenen Hotelzimmer kann man sich nämlich gerade noch auf der Stelle drehen, wenn unsere Koffer nicht gestapelt sind.)

- Drei Minuten später wurde ein Zettel unter unserer Tür hindurchgeschoben, auf dem unsere Ablehnung des Service offiziell quittiert wurde und man uns mitteilte, dass wir bis 16:30 Uhr die Möglichkeit hätten, unsere Meinung zu ändern ("But, however, if your plans has been change..."). Sollte das nicht der Fall sein ("If no advise to us by 5 pm..."), würde man sich auf das Nötigste beschränken ("replenish the amenities"). Das wunderte uns zwar ein wenig, schließlich hatten wir eigentlich deutlich zum Ausdruck gebracht, dass wir tatsächlich zwei Nächte mit derselben Bettwäsche auskommen, aber aufgeräumt haben wir trotzdem. Sie haben schließlich freundlich darum gebeten. ("Thank you for your co-operations.")

- Nach diesem vergnüglichen Start in den Tag machten wir uns auf, endlich ein paar Museen zu besichtigen. Allerdings waren wir auch heute nur mäßig erfolgreich. Eines war langweilig, das andere ein wenig kriegsverherrlichend. Das war's dann mit uns und den japanischen Museen.

- Inzwischen war es zwar schon halb sechs, aber wir wollten unseren letzten Tag in Tokio auch zum Shopping nutzen und sind deshalb quer durch die Stadt nach Asakusa gefahren, weil es dort Dinge geben sollte, die sich als Mitbringsel eignen. Genau das gab es dann auch: Jede Menge Plastikmüll für Touristen.

- Weil wir nicht so richtig was zum Mitbringen gefunden haben, sind wir stattdessen zu einem Süßwarenstand, an dem mit einer Maschine kleine Teigkuchen gefüllt und warm verkauft wurden. Und weil wir zusehen konnten, wie dieser Teig mit köstlicher Schokolade gefüllt wurde mussten wir (Bettina!) natürlich eine große Schachtel kaufen.

- ZACK! Schon hatten sie uns. Bis jetzt hatten wir es immer rechtzeitig gemerkt, aber diesmal waren wir nicht aufmerksam genug. Selbstverständlich waren diese wunderbaren warmen Kuchen nicht mit Schokolade, sondern mit Bohnenbrei gefüllt. Der kommt hier nämlich in viele Süßwaren. Ganz so fürchterlich schmeckte es zwar nicht, aber die große Packung hätte es jetzt auch nicht sein müssen.

Zurück in Osaka

- Heute ging es mit dem Shinkansen zurück nach Osaka. Im Zug konnte man zum Glück gut schlafen, wir hatten nämlich bis um halb drei Postkarten geschrieben. Dann hatten wir keine mehr und sind auf der Suche nach Nachschub durch Roppongi gezogen. Leider gab es nur Blankokarten mit aufgedruckter Briefmarke für Versand innerhalb Japans. Dafür haben wir eine Schere bekommen, mit der wir unsere Fotosticker zurechtschneiden können.

- Nach Osaka zurück zu fahren war so, als würde man nach Hause kommen. Im Vergleich zu Tokio ist hier alles so übersichtlich. Wir sind dann gleich noch einmal nach Umeda gefahren um die ersten Mitbringsel zu kaufen. (Also, Nivea gibt es hier wirklich nicht überall.)

Dafür habe ich im Virgin Megastore die Nadel im Heuhaufen gefunden. Hier dudelt nämlich überall ein bestimmtes Lied, das wir natürlich unbedingt haben mussten. In den Charts war es nicht und Vorsingen war uns ausnahmsweise zu peinlich, aber bei den Probehör-Stationen war eine CD, die genauso kitschig aussah, wie das Lied klingt, et voilà - das war sie!

- Beeindruckend waren auch die Character Merchandise Stores. Ein Laden mit Disney-Artikeln, ein Laden mit Snoopy-Artikeln, ein Laden mit den Figuren aus der Semsamstraße. Da gibt es alles von der Snoopy-Namenskrawatte bis zur Schneewittchen-Brotbox. Und alles wird gekauft. Wir machen diesen gesteuerten Konsumwahn natürlich nicht mit. Wir haben das Einkaufszentrum direkt verlassen und sind ins benachbarte Warenhaus gegangen. Schließlich haben nur die eine spezielle "Hello Kitty"-Abteilung, in der es diese süßen Sachen gibt, die wir unbedingt nach Deutschland mitbringen müssen.

- Hier gibt es unheimlich viel Personal für alles Mögliche und Unmögliche. Einmal sind da massenhaft Reinigungskräfte, die die Bahnhöfe auf der dauernden Suche nach fallengelassenem Papier durchstreifen. Und dann gibt es die Kaufhäuser. Die müssen nämlich durch überproportional viel Personal nachweisen, dass das Wohl ihrer Kunden über allem anderen steht. In einem besseren Kaufhaus steht stets eine adrett gekleidete Dame an der Rolltreppe hinter dem Eingang und nickt jedem, wirklich jedem Kunden zur Begrüßung zu. Ab und zu wischt sie auch das Geländer der Rolltreppe.

Letzter Tag in Osaka

- Da heute unser letzter Tag war, wollten wir nochmal das volle Programm haben. Deshalb sind wir zuerst einmal zum Shitennoji-Tempel gefahren und haben - TADA - doch tatsächlich noch ein Museum besucht. Das war zwar nicht sehr groß, aber ziemlich interessant. Neben riesengroßen zeremoniellen Gongs gab es sechshundert Jahre alte Biographie-Comics.

- Innerhalb der Tempelanlage befindet sich auch ein großer Friedhof, was hier etwas Besonderes ist, weil man nicht sehr viel Platz hat, auch für Friedhöfe nicht. Zum Glück nehmen buddhistische Gräber traditionellerweise nicht so viel Platz ein. Außerdem gab es noch einen Teich in der Tempelanlage, der voll mit Schildkröten war.

- Nachdem wir mit der Tempelanlage fertig waren, sind wir nach Den-Den-Town gefahren. Das ist der Stadtteil von Osaka, in dem man alles kaufen kann, was mit Technik zu tun hat. Wir hatten eigentlich eine Reihe von Media-Markt-Verwandten erwartet, fanden aber nur reihenweise Einzelhändler, die sich gegenseitig durch möglichst laute Außenwerbung zu übertreffen versuchten.

- Außerdem gab es mindestens soviele Mangaläden wie Technikgeschäfte. Das sind hier ziemlich große, mehrstöckige Geschäfte mit meterlangen Regalgängen. Da gibt es billige Massenware, eingeschweißte Sammlerstücke (wie beim Comic Book
-Guy bei den Simpsons) und natürlich Manga-Figuren. Und immer eine große Erwachsenenabteilung. Die Erotik-, nein, Porno-Mangas kann man hier überall kaufen - eine beliebte Lektüre für die U-Bahn.

+ Hier gibt es unheimlich viel Personal für alles Mögliche und Unmögliche. Einmal sind da massenhaft Reinigungskräfte, die die Bahnhöfe auf der dauernden Suche nach fallengelassenem Papier durchstreifen. Und dann gibt es die Kaufhäuser. Die müssen nämlich durch überproportional viel Personal nachweisen, dass das Wohl ihrer Kunden über allem anderen steht. In einem besseren Kaufhaus steht stets eine adrett gekleidete Dame an der Rolltreppe hinter dem Eingang und nickt jedem, wirklich jedem Kunden zur Begrüßung zu. Ab und zu wischt sie auch das Geländer der Rolltreppe.

Letzter Tag in Osaka
+
+ Da heute unser letzter Tag war, wollten wir nochmal das volle Programm haben. Deshalb sind wir zuerst einmal zum Shitennoji-Tempel gefahren und haben - TADA - doch tatsächlich noch ein Museum besucht. Das war zwar nicht sehr groß, aber ziemlich interessant. Neben riesengroßen zeremoniellen Gongs gab es sechshundert Jahre alte Biographie-Comics.

+ Innerhalb der Tempelanlage befindet sich auch ein großer Friedhof, was hier etwas Besonderes ist, weil man nicht sehr viel Platz hat, auch für Friedhöfe nicht. Zum Glück nehmen buddhistische Gräber traditionellerweise nicht so viel Platz ein. Außerdem gab es noch einen Teich in der Tempelanlage, der voll mit Schildkröten war.

+ Nachdem wir mit der Tempelanlage fertig waren, sind wir nach Den-Den-Town gefahren. Das ist der Stadtteil von Osaka, in dem man alles kaufen kann, was mit Technik zu tun hat. Wir hatten eigentlich eine Reihe von Media-Markt-Verwandten erwartet, fanden aber nur reihenweise Einzelhändler, die sich gegenseitig durch möglichst laute Außenwerbung zu übertreffen versuchten.

+ Außerdem gab es mindestens soviele Mangaläden wie Technikgeschäfte. Das sind hier ziemlich große, mehrstöckige Geschäfte mit meterlangen Regalgängen. Da gibt es billige Massenware, eingeschweißte Sammlerstücke (wie beim Comic Book
+Guy bei den Simpsons) und natürlich Manga-Figuren. Und immer eine große Erwachsenenabteilung. Die Erotik-, nein, Porno-Mangas kann man hier überall kaufen - eine beliebte Lektüre für die U-Bahn.

An easy-to-use music player for children based on the Raspberry Pi Zero and the JBL On Stage IIIp

In spring 2016 I finalized the "Musikrakete", an MP3 player that our boys could operate without assistance. This is the improved second version, which is even easier to use. Music is played by simply placing a QR code card on top of the sphere. It plays MP3 files from the local network or Google drive and audiostreams from the Internet. If you have children who love music, ever used a terminal and also know what end of a soldering iron not to touch, this might be a project for you.

The Idea
+
+ This project started about a year ago, when Anica asked me if buying a hörbert MP3 player would be a good idea. At the time our boys wasted two to three CDs every week, trying to get some music out of the small player in their room. And the player in the living room also seemed to reach its end of life pretty soon due to their enthusiasm. Still I wasn't too sure about this hörbert thing. In order to get new files on the SD card of the player, the case had to be opened, the navigation with 11 buttons also seemed a little confusing and a single speaker operated with four batteries also did not seem promising to me.

+ I had seen a project description of an MP3 player for small children shortly before: A Raspberry Pi mini computer, connected to a webcam and speakers, reads QR codes and plays the respective track or playlist. So this was what I suggested and to my surprise it was considered a better solution right away. And I had a project.
+
+
+
+ As good as the project description seemed to be, I wanted to make some improvements on the original design: The player should detect the QR automatically, it should have buttons for play/pause and skipping and all components should be put together in a single case. Most importantly, the MP3 files should be delivered directly from our home server. No SD card replacement needed.
+
+
+
+ Since we had an old JBL OnStage IIIp speaker lying around that wasn't used anymore due to its outdated iPhone dock connector, I decided to use this as a base. After playing around with Onshape, soldering and programming for three months, I had the Musikrakete ready by end of March 2016. It's been a huge success with the boys and has been in heavy use ever since.

+ But there were still some open ends on the technical side and I knew that we might need a second player, once the boys each have a room of their own. So when Anica was searching for a good gift to her best friend's sons we decided that an updated version would be a good idea.
+

PiPlayer 2.0: AudioSphere
+
+
+ The major improvement in handling was switching from a QR card slot to a window on top where the QR cards are placed on. I had seen that especially the two-year-old had problems getting the cards into the narrow slot. Unfortunately, this also meant that a rocket shape was not an option anymore. At first I tried to put only a hemisphere on top of the JBL speaker which would make it look like a UFO. But the webcam needed at least 8 cm distance to the card in order have the entire QR code covered. Technically, it would be possible to further reduce the size of the ball but fitting all the components in there is hard enough as it is.

+ Since we had problems with the Wi-Fi connection in the boy's room an ethernet port is now also available and thanks to switching to the Raspberry Pi Zero, the Apple dock port can power all the components. No additonal power source needed anymore. By incorporating a Pimoroni PHAT DAC I removed all the audio-related headaches. (You can order one together with the RasPi Zero as a kit.)

+ On the software side there's two major improvements: The SD card is now mounted read-only by default. This makes unplugging the AudioSphere by accident or for reboot unproblematic. And the Python script that operates the player now uses interrupts instead of polling for checking the input sources - no more busy waiting! You can find the entire documentation including the central Python script in the GitHub repository.

+ OK, so much for the overview - let's build this, step by step.

+ First step was the design of the new case. Like the first rocket case it's public, you can find it here on Onshape. (You will need to create an account to open the document.) Or you can download the STL files for printing if you are using the very same components. Please note that you will need to rotate the top of the sphere 180° for printing. Also be careful about the Raspberry holder: The Raspberry Pi together with the PHAT DAC should have a height of 7.2 mm (or less) which depends on the GPIO header that is used to solder the PHAT DAC to the RasPi. If the height exeeds that, the distance needs to be adjusted before printing.

Update and Basic Setup
+
+ Before installing anything additionally, Raspbian Lite has to be set up on the SD card. When the card is ready, it is necessary to at least once connect a monitor and a keyboard to the RasPi for the initial setup since SSH is disabled by default. As soon as SSH is enabled and Wi-Fi is configured, we can remove all the cables and continue to work remotely over SSH.
+
+

+ From here on it's basically entering line by line to your terminal (and later on it's copy-and-paste via SSH). You might need to confirm or close something every now and then. Where a configuration file has to be edited, the contents that go to the file are also put in comments with a leading tab. The links are the references for the individual steps.

+ Now that the RasPi is ready, the next step is setting up all the other hardware components: The speaker, the case and the electronics.
+

Preparing the JBL IIIp Speaker
+
+ In order to drill the holes for the screws, the speaker has to be disassembled. The procedure is described here at ifixit.com for the predecessor which works basically the same way: Remove the rubber pads, then remove all screws from the case. (Don't forget the center screw in the battery case.) Once the speaker case is opened, the circuit board is unscrewed and removed.
+
+
+
+ I drilled the holes for the M3 screws and the IR LED cable using a template. The drill itself is set to rotate left. That way, the holes are more or less melted into the plastic to lower the risk of breaking the case.
+
+
+
+ After drilling, washers and screws are added and the infrared LED is glued directly in front of the speaker's IR sensor in order to send it commands. Before that the PINs of the IR LED are soldered to cables that are long enough to connect it to the circuit board through one of the additional holes. Also, all the electronics should be tested together before anything is hot-glued into the case.
+

+ (Disclaimer: Until now, I only did a proof of concept test script for remote contolling the speaker via the IR LED. I am planning on using that component later on via a web app but for the time being you could as well leave it out.)
+

Electronics
+
+ When the speaker has been put back together, we can go for the circuit board. There are four electronic parts: The optical sensor that triggers the QR recognition, the LED that illuminates the QR card, the infrared LED which we already glued in front of the sensor and the 3 buttons that are used to pause/unpause playback and move within the current playlist. While the buttons and the LEDs are put directly in the case, all other elements are brought together on a circuit board from where they are connected to the RasPi via jumper cables. So this is what we're aiming for:

+ Assembling the circuit is pretty straight forward. Be careful about the optical sensor, though: There are two versions out there, one from Vishay and one from TEMIC that has the detector transistor upside down compared to the other one. Also note that I used a LED that can operate directly on the RasPi's 3.3 V without a series resistor. If you use a smaller one (which should also be sufficient for illumination), you will need one.

+ Once everything is connected together, it can be put in the case for the software installation and final adjustments. All components are connected but wait using the glue gun until everything is tested thoroughly. Especially the webcam might need some in-place live adjustment. Depending on the glossyness of your code cards, the angle of the illumination LED might be relevant as well. The easiest way to do this is by connecting the webcam to another computer while it is already in the case (see bash history below).

+ What's missing in the pictures is how to get a screw thread behind the holes in the case: Use super glue to put three M3 nuts on washers (in order to enlarge the surface). When dried, use the super glue again to attach these nuts-on-washers behind the screw holes of the case. (Use the screws to adjust them so you can turn them in and out. I used UHU Super Strong and Safe which gives you some time for corrections after applying.) Et voilà , you now got yourself screw holes with threads on the player's case.

+ Now configure the additional software that is needed for the player. Before doing that, copy the contents of the piplayer2 directory (including subdirectories sounds and test) to /home/pi (either directly on the SD card or via SCP). Have also one of the test cards from the template ready for testing the QR recognition.

+ When everything works as expected, all the electronic parts are fixed together using hot glue. I glued the webcam, the circuit board and the USB hub in the case so that nothing will fall out of place anymore, even if the player is moved around roughly.

+ While I really like hot glue, it's got its limits: I thought I could skip soldering the buttons to their wires by just twirling the cable ends to the contacts and then fix everything down with the hot pistol - bad idea. While being hot, the glue gets in between the wire ends and the contacts and perfectly isolates them. None of the buttons worked anymore. I had to peel the glue off the contacts with a cutter knife before soldering them properly back on again...

Connect to SMB network share

+ Until now, we can only play local files from the SD card (and audiostreams from the Internet). The final step is to connect the local share that stores all of our MP3 files. QR Cards
+
+ With the storage attached, all the MP3 files are accessible for the player. What's missing is some QR code cards to get the party started. For that, there's a template which can be used to create new cards. After printing a page from the template, it is simply cut into stripes which are folded in the middle and then glued together.

+ For generating the QR codes pretty much every software can be used. If you are using lots of non-ASCII letters, you should make sure that they are encoded properly. (You can always check the codes that have been read by the player in the logfile with tail -f /tmp/piplayer2.log.) Personally, I use QtQR which is a frontend for qrencode.

What's Left
+
+
+ In the future I would like to have a web server running on the RasPi, which allows to control the player remotely. I'm not yet sure if this is going to be a web interface or an Android app that operates on a REST interface. I pretty often find myself skipping through the entire code card stack in the dark in order to switch to a different bedtime story that has been requested.
+
+
+
+ Also, I would like to have the last say in volume control. This is where the infrared LED that has been installed in the speaker case will come in handy.
+

+ Sobald das Netzteil eingesteckt wird, fährt der Player hoch. Damit man auch etwas hören kann, muss außerdem der Power-Button auf der Rückseite versenkt sein, so dass die grüne LED auf der Vorderseite leuchtet.
+ Der Lautsprecher geht automatisch in Stand-By, wenn eine Weile lang kein Signal kam (dann erlischt das grüne Licht). Man kann das Gerät im Normalfall also einfach anlassen.

+ Die Auflagefläche für die Karten ist 34 cm breit. In der Regel ist es eine gute Idee, Karten mit 33 cm Breite zu drucken, damit sie etwas Spielraum haben. Außerdem passen dann exakt 9 Karten nebeneinander auf ein DIN-A4-Blatt. Der QR-Code ist 10 mm breit und hat einen Abstand von 16 mm zur Oberkante der Karte.

+ Für die Karten gibt es eine Vorlage für Open/Libre Office. Um größere Mengen an Karten mit möglichst wenig Aufwand zu erzeugen, habe ich einen Generator geschrieben, der eine Liste von Verzeichnissen nach Covern durchsucht und die Karten mit den Codes automatisch erzeugt. Ich versuche, den Generator demnächst mal online zu stellen.

An easy-to-use music player for children based on the Raspberry Pi Zero and the JBL On Stage IIIp (again)

In spring 2016 I finalized the "Musikrakete", a music player that our boys could operate without assistance. This is the third version, with all of the improvements I came up with during the last three years. It is easier and cheaper to build, the case is way smaller and much more robust. By switching to volumio the player now supports remote control from the phone and streaming services like Spotify. All of this combined with the existing features like playing MP3s from the local network and, most importantly, being easy to use even for small children. So if your children love music and audio books just like mine, this might be a project for you.

The Idea
+

+
+
+ This project started in 2016, when Anica asked me if buying a hörbert MP3 player would be a good idea. At the time our boys wasted two to three CDs every week, trying to get some music out of the small player in their room. And the player in the living room also seemed to reach its end of life pretty soon due to their enthusiasm. Still, I wasn't too sure about this hörbert thing. In order to get new files on the SD card of the player, the case had to be opened, the navigation with 11 buttons seemed a little confusing and a single speaker operated with four batteries also did not seem promising to me.

+ I had seen a project description of an MP3 player for small children shortly before: A Raspberry Pi mini computer, connected to a webcam and speakers, reads QR codes and plays the respective track or playlist. So this was what I suggested and to my surprise it was considered a better solution right away. And I had a project.
+
+
+
+ As good as the project description seemed to be, I wanted to make some improvements on the original design: The player should detect the QR card automatically, it should have buttons for play/pause and skipping and all components should be put together in a single case. Most importantly, the MP3 files should be delivered directly from our home server. No SD card replacement needed.
+
+
+
+ Since we had an old JBL On Stage IIIP speaker lying around that wasn't used anymore due to its outdated iPhone dock connector, I decided to use this as a base. After playing around with Onshape, soldering and programming for three months, I had the Musikrakete ready by end of March 2016. It was a huge success with the boys and has been in heavy use ever since.

+ Over the last years I came up with some improvements on the original design and created a second version. But I always had some things in the back of my mind that I wanted to make better about both the hard- and the software and when the little brother moved into a room of his own, I knew it was time to bring all that to life. So this is the smaller, better and cheaper third version. The rocket on top is optional, by the way. But little brother would never have accepted a player that did not somehow include a rocket, since the original, rocket-shaped design is still used by the older one.

PiPlayer 3.0: Qudio
+
+
+ This third version now relies on volumio which can play music from streaming services like Spotify Premium or LastFM, has a nice web interface and makes configuration easy. The case is much smaller than before, which makes it sturdier and easier to print. The electronic parts are all easily obtainable standard compontents and even cheaper than before. Again, it is built on top of the JBL On Stage IIIP speaker, that can still be found on ebay for little money and provides a perfect base for a player like this.

+ The main component is now a Raspberry Pi Zero W, that can be run off the dock connector without an additional power source. I replaced the Pimoroni PHAT DAC with a dirt cheap audio module based on the same chip. The IR sensor that detects the QR cards is now a ready-made module which makes assembly easier. The buttons have been replaced by the ubiqitous 12 mm standard components that come with every Arduino starter kit.

JBL On Stage IIIP - can be found on ebay for little money Caution: The older On Stage III with the mini USB port will probably not work! I tried several and they either did not power the Raspberry Pi properly or I had noise issues that I could not resolve.
Raspberry Pi Zero W with a micro SD card a pin header
+
CJMCU-5102 plus a 10 kΩ resistor, some PCM5102A based module or any other I2S DAC that is supported by volumio. Search for 'pHAT DAC'. A USB sound card will not work, since the USB port is used by the webcam.
The ultra-cheap USB webcam that can be found on ebay, aliexpress and the like (just sort for price). Some versions come with a small cable reel. This fits perfectly in the holder at the bottom of the case.
Disassembling the JBL and Mounting the Bottom of the Case

+ In order to mount the case on the JBL, we have to disassemble the speaker and drill some holes. The screw in the center is hidden in the battery case, while the eight others are hidden under the rubber pads. Just peel them off carefully, we can glue them back on later.
+
+
+
+ After removing the screws you can upen up the case. The circuit board is fastened with another four screws that have to be removed. Then the board can be pulled out of the case carefully. The power button of the speaker is the most sensitive part here. To make life easier, you can also pull off the speaker cables from the board. Now the cover is completely separated from the bottom and the circuit board.
+
+
+
+ The next step is to drill the three mounting holes into the cover, for which you can use this template. (Make sure to print without scaling.) Finally, we need to mount the base of the printed case to the speaker case using three M3 screws with nuts. Afterwards, we can put the circuit board back in the case and put all the screws back in place.

+
Putting the Threaded Inserts into the Printed Parts
+
+
+ Now is also a good moment to put the threaded inserts into the printed parts. This is done by carefully pushing them into the plastic with a heated soldering iron. As soon as the plastic has cooled down, the inserts will stay in place and allow to close and open the connections without tearing the plastic apart. This video on 3Dhubs shows how it is done.

+ We put two M3 inserts into the bottom of the case, one into the cover to hold the TCRT5000 sensor and the remaining two into the curb that goes on top of the case.
+

+
+
Installing the Window
+
+
+ For the window on top of the case, we need to cut a 50 × 28 mm part of acrylic glass. This can be done with a normal cutter knife by (carefully!) repeatedly cutting along your marker line with a ruler until you can break it off.
+
+
+
+ When the glass fits into the case, point through the screw holes to mark where you have to drill. The acrylic glass can then be drilled just like the speaker case in the first step. With all the parts of the case now being ready, you can to a first test on putting everything together and closing the case.
+

Camera
+
+
+ Before the camera can be put into the case, the clip on the backside has to be removed. Simply push out the pin and take it off. Now you can clip off the clip holders from the camera case.
+
+
+
+ Unfortunately, the cable also has to be moved from the back of the case, in order to be able to place the camera on top of the speaker. You can just make a small cutout with a sharp knife to make space for the cable. However, if you want to play it safe it might be better to open the case up with a screwdriver before cutting it.
+
+
+
+ With the cable out of the way, the camera can be shoved into the holder at the center of the bottom part.
+
+
+
+
+
+
+
+ Finally, the focus has to be adjusted. The best way for that is connect the camera to another computer to get a live picture. You can also do it later on, but then you will have to take a snapshot and readjust the lens in turns. It is just easier with direct feedback.
+
+
+
+ Put the cover on top for the correct distance, then check if you get a clear picture. If not, turn the lens a bit and check again until you have a sharp image.
+
+
+
Dock Adapter Cable
+
+
+ Now insert the adapter cable on the dock connector in front of the camera. It should fit in nicely without any adjustments.
+
+
+
Buttons
+
+
+ The three buttons go directly in the small pockets on the bottom part of the printed case. While the front pins are put into the small holes in order to fasten them tightly, the pins on the other end should be bent up and soldered to the male end of the jumper wires. Connect the buttons to pins 10 (for PREV), 9 (for PLAY/PAUSE) and 11 (for NEXT). The other sides go to the ground pins 20, 30 and 34.

Sensor
+
+
+ The TCRT5000 sensor module is connected as follows:

+ The pins of the module need to be bent up to fit in the case. (For some reason all the modules have 90 degree pins.) We can then use the M3 screw hole to fasten it to the top. The little potentiometer on board allows to adjust the sensitivity of the sensor in place, if needed.
+
+
+
+ My sensor permanently fired whenever I tightened the screw. Apparently the threaded insert connected two of the pins. I solved this by covering the pins on the back side with some hot glue.
+
+
+
+ The next problem was a little red power LED on the module. While being tiny, it put the whole printed case in a permanent red glow that did not look pretty and also would have been disturbing given that the player was to be put on a nightstand. + The led is put in the small holder at the front side inside the cover. Connect the long leg to pin 15 (GPIO 22) of the Raspberry Pi (with a resistor in between, if needed), the short one to pin 9 (GND). I dimmed the LED with a 220 Ω resistor even though mine could operate directly on 3.3 V because it was just too bright. The QR recognition does not need much light.

Closing the Case
+
+
+ Now it is time to put the remaining parts in place: Hook up the camera to the Raspberry Pi using the micro USB adapter. Also connect the two ends of the dock adapter cable to the audio module and the Raspberry Pi. Move all the cables in a place where they do not block the camera, bring up your best origami and close the case. You might need two or three attemps until everything is in the right place, but it fits in, believe me.

+ OK, well done. Now reopen the case, the player is still missing its SD card with the software.

Software Installation and Configuration
+

Volumio
+
+
+ First of all, you will have to download the volumio image for Raspberry Pi and put it on your micro SD card. (I use balenaEtcher for that, which works fine.) Once you have done that, put it in and start the Raspberry Pi by powering the speaker.
+
+
+
+ The initial configuration is pretty straight forward. Connect to the WiFi network "volumio" that has been opened up. If it asks for a password, enter "volumio2", then click through the installation assistant. Set the output to "Generic I2S DAC", activate the software mixer and connect your network share (if any). You can also already set up plugins for streaming services like Spotify. Finally, activate SSH on the developer page qudio.local/dev (or whatever your hostname was) for the next steps.

+ Before you leave the SD card in the Raspberry Pi for good, you might want to shutdown volumio, put the card back into your computer and copy over the contents of the /code directory to /data/INTERNAL/qudio. (The data directory is only available after first start, which is why we had to complete the installation assistant first.)
+

+
+ Alternatively you can copy over the code via ssh, but doing it directly on the SD card might be easier. In addition to that, you can put some music directly on the SD card, if you want to. Everything in the INTERNAL directory will be available in volumio after a rescan.
+
+
+
+
Configuration und Test
+
+
+ After putting the SD card back in and booting up the player you can connect to the Raspberry Pi via SSH as user volumio. The initial password is volumio which you might want to change with passwd.
+
+
+
+ The next step is to install the necessary software packages:
+
+ Now look for the camera (it should be available under /dev/video0) and make a test photo. You can check it out from your computer at http://qudio.local/backgrounds/webcam-test.jpg (if you set Qudio as hostname, like me).
+
+ Before we go on, we need Python 3.6 on the Raspberry Pi. Earlier versions have a bug in socketio-client (which we need for remote control of volumio) and the current version 3.7 has a problem with OpenSSL, so 3.6 it is. Unfortunately, we will have to built it from the source, which takes a while.
+
+ Now it the system should be able to run the test scripts:

QR Cards
+
+
+ The QR code on the cards should be about 10×10 mm large with 16 mm padding on top of the card:

+
+
+ While the curb leaves 34 mm space for the card's width, it is a good practice to print the cards with a width of 33 mm. That way they do not get stuck and you can place exactly 9 cards in a line on an A4 sheet.
+
+ Since the creation of the cards can be a bit of a hassle when the collection grows larger, I have written a card generator for Spotify links. It takes a list of Spotify URIs as input and generates a PDF with the QR codes, the title and the album art. The information is printed both on the front and the back of the cards in order to make sorting of card stacks easier. I will put the generator online as soon as possible.

When we moved in our house this year, one of the first things we missed was a doorbell. There was a bell button at the gate, but since the whole building had been gutted down to the concrete nobody knew where the cable ended. When I found a cut-off electric cable in the basement, I suspected that it could be the one leading to the button. With a little help of my beloved multimeter I could confirm that assumption.

However, that led to the next problem: Not only was the cable cut 2 cm off the wall, there was also no way to extend it to the first floor. And a doorbell in the basement is pretty much useless. There are WiFi solutions available that allow to put the bell in a different room, but they are expensive and need a 220 V hookup. So we settled with a wireless doorbell for the time being but it turned out not to be completely reliable, pretty ugly in comparison to the existing button and I did not like the battery based solution. So I set out to revive the old doorbell with the help of a microcontroller. Or two.

The concept is easy: The first microcontroller detects the push on the button and sends a request to the second microcontroller via the home WiFi. That second microcontroller is connected to a speaker and plays a bell sound. Since I am pretty new to the Arduino world and wanted to keep things easy, I used Espressif ESP32 boards that have integrated WiFi. To make it even easier, I added a cheap MP3 player module.

Not much to see here. Basically just throwing all the modules together. In the end I left out the LED on the speaker side. (It is still addressed in the code, though.)

I designed the two cases in Onshape, one for the sender and one for the speaker unit. The speaker case has a thin grid at the bottom and a little stand that is glued on in order to let the sound pass out.
